Let’s talk shoes.

You don't need special shoes for this course. Seriously, you can dance in whatever you've got on. But if you want to lean into the aesthetic and really feel the part, let's talk about the shoes that were actually made for this.

Stage shoes are not the same as your going out heels. The grip on the bottom is completely different, built to keep you from slipping on stage instead of sliding around on it. The platform is also much higher than what you're used to, and that's not just for looks. It keeps your foot more level while you're up on that heel, and it gives you the illusion of wearing an even taller shoe than you actually are.

If you're new to this, start with a strap and stay at 5 inches or under. Once you've got some practice under your belt and your balance is solid, you can work your way up to a 6 or 7 inch heel. I wouldn't go any higher than that, even with experience.

My favorite shoe brand is Pleaser Shoes. The styles are gorgeous. Google it!

One important note. These shoes are not made for rugs or carpet. If you're practicing at home, stick to wood, tile, or linoleum. Rugs and carpet will have you wobbly and unstable, and that's how falls happen.

Again, the shoes are optional. And they're one of the most fun ways to step into character and play with the whole aesthetic.
